The Winterset Madisonian: Vote!
October 10, 2018
By Patty Weeks, Winterset
There are many reasons for going to the polls and voting in the 2018 midterm elections. I have, in the past, voted for both Democrats and Republicans. I have voted for both Senator Grassley and Stan Gustafson in past years and trusted them to make important decisions on my behalf. This year I will be voting a straight Democratic ticket.
Since the election of Donald Trump in 2016 and the resulting political power shift to right, it seems that common sense, critical thinking and compassionate problem solving have been left in the past. The checks and balances, the consideration of opposing view points, and bipartisan efforts to solve problems don’t work when only one party is in control of all branches of government.
A stronger Democratic presence in national, state and local elected positions will provide much needed balance to the current Republican Party which holds the presidency, both houses of Congress, Iowa Governor and both the Iowa Senate and House. Currently, when laws or policy change is considered at state or federal levels, the views of half of Americans aren’t considered.
When I call my legislators to talk about climate change, the Supreme Court or health care, my views don’t matter. When I call state legislators they listen politely but always vote as a block.
My voice doesn’t matter. They are on the red team, I’m on the blue team. End of story.
I would encourage readers to vote! Vote so that you will have a voice in your government. Vote to protect what’s important to you. I will be voting for Cindy Axne, Fred Hubbell, Vicki Brenner, Ryan Marquardt, Alan Feirer and Jana Corkrean to bring a sense of balance and equal access back to our government at both the state and national levels.
