CINDY AXNE ON DAVID YOUNG’S HEALTH CARE ‘RESOLUTION’ STUNT
Des Moines, IA – Fifty-four days before the midterm elections, U.S. Congressman David Young, along with 27 vulnerable Republicans in Congress, introduced a non-binding “resolution” expressing concern for people with pre-existing conditions. Today, Cindy Axne, Democratic candidate for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, released the following statement on the resolution that would protect 0 Iowans with pre-existing conditions:
“This Resolution won’t protect a single Iowan with pre-existing conditions. Congressman Young has had plenty of opportunities to show Iowa families that he would protect their healthcare. But unfortunately, time and time again, he has voted with his Republican colleagues to undo insurance protections,” said Democratic congressional candidate, Cindy Axne.
“This is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to protect David Young’s job, not Iowans with pre-existing conditions. It is insulting that David Young thinks Iowans will forget his voting record because he ‘expressed concern’ for people with pre-existing conditions 54 days before the election,” added Cindy Axne spokesperson Madeleine Russak. “But I am confident that Iowans will remember that David Young caved to Republican pressure and voted for the disastrous healthcare bill that would have gutted protections for people with pre-existing conditions.”
On March 22, 2017, David Young said he would oppose the GOP healthcare bill. On March 23, the Congressional Leadership Fund announced they would no longer support David Young’s re-election bid. On May 4, David Young caved to Republican pressure and turned his back on Iowans by voting for the American Health Care Act, which would have gutted protections for pre-existing conditions and raised health care costs.
