Candidates in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District race are reacting to President Trump’s statements following his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Trump and Putin held a two-hour closed door meeting in Helsinki, Finland earlier this week. Following the meeting, Trump complimented Putin in a news conference, and questioned U.S. intelligence findings regarding Russian collusion in the 2016 presidential elections. Trump backtracked on his statements Tuesday, saying he misspoke. Speaking on KMA’s “Morning Line” program, Iowa Congressman David Young says it’s right for Trump to meet with world leaders. However, the Republican incumbent says the president could have handled the situation better.
“Hey, there’s no doubt Russia interfered with our elections,” said Young. “It’s been confirmed by our intelligence community, our congressional committees. They had some closed-door meetings–I don’t know what was said there, and I do hope the issue was brought up–in the public setting, I think the president missed an opportunity to clarify and express serious displeasure with Putin and Russia in interfering with our elections, and putting a shot across the bow to Putin that if this happens again, there’s going to be serious repercussions. What are those repercussions? Could be enhanced sanctions on the energy sector against Russia, the financial sector–those kind of things.”
