(Shenandoah) — Candidates running in key federal, state and local races in the November general election assembled in Shenandoah Tuesday night for an important event.
Democrats from several southwest Iowa counties packed the Depot Restaurant’s back room for a “Conversation With the Candidates.” Cindy Axne, Democratic nominee in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, was among the headliners speaking at the event. Among other issues, Axne addressed the trade tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration against China and other countries, and their impact on Iowa farmers. Axne says farmers shouldn’t have to suffer from decisions made in Washington, D.C., and questioned why Republicans didn’t try to stop Trump from imposing the tariffs.
“I don’t think this is a practice that is beneficial,” said Axne. “It’s a place that we’re at right now, and sometimes these are the things that we are dealing with. Moving forward, we should never, of course, gotten into this situation to begin with, and we should have had Republicans standing up against this administration and these tariffs a heck of a long time ago.”
